How many porta potties does my crew need under OSHA?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 sets the legal minimum: 20 or fewer workers need 1 toilet; 20 or more need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers; 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. Roy Rental Works recommends 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service.

Each standard unit has one seat and one urinal. Legal minimum vs our recommendation — confirm site rules with your GC or inspector.

Official text: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 — Sanitation. Mobile crews with transportation to nearby toilets can be exempt under 1926.51(c)(4). General information, not legal advice.

Worked example: a 35-person framing crew. OSHA’s minimum is 1 seat and 1 urinal, so 1 standard unit is legal. With 35 people on one weekly service, that unit fills mid-week, so we recommend 4 units. Run your own crew count.

What does weekly porta potty service on a jobsite include?

Weekly porta potty service on a Columbia jobsite includes pumping the waste tank, scrubbing and sanitizing the seat, urinal, walls and floor, adding fresh deodorizer, and restocking toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The service tech checks the door, latch and vent and moves the unit if the site layout has changed.

How does 28-day jobsite billing work?

Jobsite porta potties bill on a 28-day cycle. The first cycle includes the unit, weekly service, delivery and pickup. Every later cycle covers the rental and weekly service only. Roy Rental Works does not pick up automatically, so call when the job ends and billing stops from the day you call.

  1. Book

Give the site address or GPS pin, start date, crew size and gate code.

  2. Delivery

Set on level ground, away from the dumpster path and staging areas.

  3. Weekly service

Same weekday each week; extra visits on request.

  4. Call for pickup

Billing stops from the day you call.

Where should a porta potty go on a construction site?

Put a jobsite porta potty on level, firm ground within about 25 feet of a drivable path, so the service truck can reach it every week. Keep it away from the dumpster swing, material drops, trenches and overhead work. Stake units on open lots and roofing jobs where wind can tip them.

Roofing crews often need a unit at the curb for just a few days. Ask for a short-term jobsite rental when the job will finish within a week. Contractors who run several sites can ask about invoicing for their account.

Construction porta potty questions

My porta potty supplier didn’t show up. Can you get one here today?

Call (803) 343-9777 by 12 PM and we will try to set a unit the same day. Same-day jobsite drops are common for roofing and framing crews whose supplier missed a delivery. A rush fee may apply and is stated before you book.

Can you service the unit twice a week?

Twice-weekly service is available for crews over 20, long shifts or summer heat. Each extra visit is a per-visit charge listed on your quote.

Do you have porta potties that move with the crew?

A towable, trailer-mounted unit moves with utility line, road and pipeline crews. Your crew tows it to the next work zone, and we service it where it sits.

Will you deliver to a lot with no street address?

Send a GPS pin or cross streets, and mark the spot with a stake or ribbon. New-construction lots in growing areas like Blythewood and Elgin often have no address yet.

Can I get a lock on the jobsite unit?

A hasp for your padlock is free on request. Locking the unit overnight keeps the public out of open sites.

Who pays if the unit is damaged on site?

The renter covers damage beyond normal use, such as fire, vandalism, graffiti or a unit knocked over by equipment. Placing the unit away from machine paths prevents most damage.
